There were two exhibitions at Presentation House Gallery (now @thepolygongallery) that were big inspirations for me when starting the #NatalieBrettschneiderArchive . The exhibition “Don’t Kiss Me: Disruptions of the Self in the Work of #ClaudeCahun ,” curated by Karen Love in Nov/Dec 1998, made me think about the ways in which an artist might be forgotten and later “rediscovered,” and provided a compelling example of an artist using photography as a theatrical space. Art historian Shelley Rice’s talk in conjunction with this show stimulated my thinking about the role that identification plays in determining which artists are written about, exhibited and remembered.
In 2000, in conjunction with another show at Presentation House titled “The Legendary Lee Miller: Photographs, 1929 – 1964,” Miller’s son Antony Penrose gave a talk about #LeeMiller ’s life and work. He mentioned that his mother had shot some images credited to #ManRay , who she was assisting at the time – in particular, fashion assignments for magazines. He also related that his mother had discovered solarization when a mouse startled her while she was developing film and she turned on the light, exposing the negatives that were in the developer. Anecdotes like these have inspired the creation of various pieces for the Brettschneider Archive. Women artists, musicians, and singers active in the Parisian avant garde have been an ongoing research obsession… [ #VanArtTakeover 📷 #CarolSawyer ]
