Fear of Falling
When I started coaching adults instead of children I had to adjust my approach for many reasons (see article link in my bio on the Adult Handstand). But the biggest obstacle was fear of falling. And until a student can kick up fully with confidence, they will never explore that hovering ‘sweet spot’ that represents balance.
There are many ways to teach adults to bail and I have tried each strategy on my students in class. I love my students so much as they have been wonderful and patient guinea pigs over the years. In terms of bailing strategies, I am not a fan of rolling, which was often uncontrolled and terrifying. Learning to cartwheel is useful but teaching the bail simply as a cartwheel rarely worked in practice as students would bail too early and freeze at the final full kick up stage, shown in my first demonstration.
So I now use this “throw the baby into the pool” strategy. It actually works!
First I have students fall right over into something comfy like a mat or mattress (or pool if not in Canada). This is to experience ‘going right over’ and what that feels like.
Then with a spotter, I gently push them over and guide their legs for a pirouette bail. It is essential that you go right over and do not prematurely bail. Otherwise you will never feel the balance point.
Here my student nails the bail in her first try! She then practiced freestanding handstands on her own for the rest of the class. Success!
Once you have developed the requisite shoulder and wrist strength to do freestanding give it a try! You can also do it against a wall (shown in the last video) but it is way easier with a spotter.
