"One of the biggest ethnic conflicts in Assam was the June-July 2012 Kokrajhar riots between Bodo tribes and Muslims, mostly of Bangla origin. The violence led to a humanitarian crisis in which 77 people died and 400,000 were displaced, reviving fears of those considered outsiders in Assam. The definition of who was Assamese became central to the state’s politics."- HT.
Most of the displaced were Muslims. The Indian army deployed with other to "shoot at sight". Around 500 villages got destroyed through arson. In November of the same year, some Muslims returned back. But communal tension remained persistent.
Alot of the Muslim settled in relief camps/ model villages provided by NGOs. They are trying to put their lives back on track. Though it's been almost 5 years, but they are still struggling due to lack of support by authorities.
