I sat down with @joeyrajan_ to talk about why there's a need for feminism in today's society. ~
“Even though I view myself as a modern day feminist, when Hassan asked me about whether I'd be open to talking about my take on feminism... I immediately shut the idea down. I've procrastinated doing this purely out of fear; fear of getting the facts wrong, fear of being viewed as extreme and fear of being viewed as unnecessary. Reflecting on my apprehension to take part in this project, has shown me that the root of my angst stems from the misunderstood stereotypes associated with feminism in today's society.
The first wave of feminism was brought about in a time where Women's rights were practically non existent. Considering how far we've come in terms of gender equality, it begs the question as to whether feminism is really needed in today's society, especially in the Western world. ~
Well in my opinion, fuck yeah we do.. ~
Even though the fight for equality is no longer based upon overturning legal obstacles; we still live in a society where young women are being taught how to prevent rape, by not walking alone at night or wearing 'provocative' clothing, as oppose to teaching people to not view women as objects. We still live in a society that has seen a 24% rise in male suicide in the last 15 years, with the majority of studies on such horrific statistics mentioning that the construction of masculinity and the expectations placed upon men to behave in a certain way, as being a contributing factor. So even though this vision of an equal society may be seen as unattainable by those who do not value feminism, I believe that any steps taken to bring us closer to such a goal are worth it, despite whether the goal is eventually met.” ~
