Here's the thing about your health: its more about your mind than it is about the food. 🔮
Im living proof. When I ate the healthiest Id ever eaten in my life (mostly raw vegan - mostly "by the book" - mostly entirely wrong for my body), I gained 30 pounds in only a few months. Mostly fat mass. It wasn't a healthy weight gain. I was exercising and going to yoga. I had puffy cheeks- you could see the inflammation in my face. I was probably eating under 1000 calories a day. My life revolved around being obsessed over having the perfect diet. This went on for 3 years. The symptoms I struggled with most got worse (Bloating, stubborn adult acne, mid section weight gain..). It wasn't until I loosened up the grip on my diet that things started to change. I tried an experiment. I let myself eat what I wanted. I listened closer. I let my intuition be heard. I ate a croissant if I wanted! (This is coming from the girl who would have a meltdown when a refined carb came within 5 metres of her). This new way of "eating" - called LIVING- took a lot of work on shifting my mindset around food and my intentions behind why I was eating the way I was. Intention is EVERYTHING. Mindset is everything. It's never really about the food if you look close enough.
#PMS cravings? For chocolate? And more chocolate?
Yup, been there too. I would actually be lying if I didn't tell you I'd eat an entire bag of bulk chocolate almonds for dinner around that time, before I did some major work on my hormones. Now I hardly crave chocolate anymore, but these chocolate covered chlorella strawberries are epic... any time of the month 😉
All you need are some strawberries, a few tbsp of raw cacao powder, melted with 1-2 tbsp coconut oil and a tsp of coconut sugar or pure maple syrup, and 1 tsp of @sunchlorellausa chlorella powder or granules.
Melt all ingredients in a saucepan over low heat (don't boil), except chlorella. Once all ingredients are melted, add chlorella in. You don't want to heat the chlorella much because the heat can destroy its delicate enzymes and nutrients.
Dip the strawberries in your chlorella chocolate, and place in the freezer for an hour. Enjoy!
PS: fun fact: chocolate cravings when you're about to get your period (and during) are said to be a sign of magnesium deficiency. Chlorella is a good source of magnesium to help beat those cravings. Zingggg. 🌱
"Why do you always come here alone?" That's what the man working at my favourite Thai restaurant asked me tonight when I ordered my dinner. "You need a boyfriend or husband" he said.
For any of my friends who are new to my page, I moved to Playa del Carmen, México by myself almost 3 years ago. Just me. I'd never been here before, and I didn't know a soul. I moved here to escape a bad relationship- a bad relationship with myself.
Of course, you bring yourself wherever you go and there is no such thing as a geographical cure- it's an illusion. But I felt an unmistakeable pull towards Playa del Carmen, and I somehow knew that the healing that had to be done - in the toxic relationship I was in- would happen here.
Let me tell you.. I never could've imagined the ways that the energy of this place could crack me open, and show me the good, bad, and ugly sides of myself.. and bring to the surface everything I'd been avoiding and hiding behind that needed to be healed: food issues, addiction, self worth issues, setting better boundaries, and most importantly, learning what it really feels like to love and accept yourself.
I believe there was no better person for me to be with these past few years than me. When I take myself out for dinner, I feel deep gratitude and appreciation for what is- not the sadness or emptiness of wanting someone else to be there. Could I do this 3 years ago? No.
You see.. when you begin to accept and love yourself, there are no voids left to fill. All of a sudden, you can go out for dinner and not order the wine. You can pass on the dessert. You can stop eating when you're full. You can loosen up the grip on your diet and stop looking to outside sources as a way to control the discontentment you feel inside. Because it's never really about the food, is it? (No, it's not). Personally, I needed to be on my own and "date" myself to be able to heal the areas in my life that were screaming for my attention. The mindset I have today, and the relationship I have with myself now, is a work in progress.. but it's the foundation for everything else I am creating in my life. And this shift in your mindset is where all of the magic happens 🔑
What's important is that you never stop believing you can have a new beginning 💜
totally unrelated to this quote: turmeric latte to comfort you on sick/ happy/ rainy/ grumpy/bloaty / lazy/ joyful/ any-kind-of-mood days.
Recipe: 1 tsp turmeric + 1 inch fresh ginger + 1 tsp vanilla extract + 1 cup nut milk + 1 tsp pure maple syrup + 1 tsp cinnamon. Place all ingredients in pot and stir on medium heat but don't bring to a boil. Once warm and ingredients are combined, pour into your fav mug and add cracked black pepper. 💋
Stop judging yourself.
For what you want, how you feel, and the mistakes you've made. Instead give yourself permission to make mistakes, to feel what you feel, and to want what you want. When you forgive, love and accept yourself exactly the way you are, the REAL magic happens. Your heart opens. Your intuition is stronger. Your eyes shine brighter. The weight comes off. The digestive issues disappear. Your skin clears up.. Your mindset is where the real healing begins- no food, supplement or meal plan can do for you what loving yourself does. ❤
Every situation, good and bad, has an important purpose-- even if you can't see it right now.
If you would've told me 5 years ago that today I'd be so thankful for all of the health issues I went through-- from cystic acne, to unexplained weight gain (seemingly overnight), chronic bloating and digestive issues, and a seriously toxic relationship with food-- I would've said you were insane. After all, I was spending most days feeling miserable, extremely uncomfortable in my body, and frustrated.
But the very curse I thought I had turned out to be one of my biggest blessings. Those symptoms allowed me to develop deep empathy for other women who are going through the same thing, and to understand the sense of urgency when it comes to dealing with those symptoms. When you feel like shit and lose your confidence, it keeps you stuck in a low vibration where you can't attract joy and happiness into your life.
I get it. I know how impossible it seems right now to go from where you are, to where you want to be. But let me tell you.. it can happen so much quicker than you think. If you have questions or need guidance with where you're at in your healing journey.. Sunday mornings 🌴 Mercury in Retrograde finally ended on September 5 and now we're sliding back into some normalcy. Feels gooooood.
Ps: one of my favourite breakfast hacks lately is to make fresh almond milk for my coffee in 20 seconds - no soaking or straining required- by blending 1 tbsp almond butter with filtered water. So frothy, creamy, fresh and easy breezy. ☕️ I can't take credit for this though, I learned it from @vitalproteins 😏
Feelin' spicy? 😏 Me-ow. Then may I suggest: my turmeric latte recipe.
1 cup unsweetened vanilla nut milk + 1 tsp fresh grated turmeric + 1 tsp fresh grated ginger + 1 tsp cinnamon + 1 tsp coconut nectar or maple syrup + a twist of black pepper
Warm up nut milk on the stove over low heat (but don't bring to a boil), stir in all ingredients except pepper. Once ingredients are combined and warm, pour into your favourite mug, add black pepper, and sip right away. You can adjust the amount of spices and sweetener. Personally I love cranking up the ginger 😈👍🏻
One thing that is (unfortunately) REALLY easy to do, is to get caught up in all of the health information online, most of which is contradicted in some way. "Everyone should be vegan, there's no need for meat." "Everyone should be Paleo and grain free." The truth is, when it comes to health info, you can literally find something wrong with everything... even broccoli & kale. It gets overwhelming. What are you supposed to eat?
My advice might sound like a cliche but really, you can find out what YOUR body actually wants by how you feel after eating- energy levels, mental focus, mood, etc. For example, I used to be vegetarian and ate very high carb (plant foods only, none of the processed junk). I juiced greens everyday and ate grains and legumes. By the book (or at least, by "someone's" book) I was "healthy" but I suffered digestive agony & gained 30 lbs (this was also related to stress, but over the years by becoming more aware of how foods affect me, I gain fat mass quickly and feel lethargic when I eat a higher carb to protein and fat ratio). This may be the exact opposite for you. You may thrive on a high clean carb diet. My point... No stressing over food. Nope. None of that. 🗝 Let your body be the guide. What you respond well to right now could also change in the future: listen to that. Don't rely on studies or information online to dictate your diet- take them with a grain of (Himalayan) salt. Most health info is subjective and changes on the daily. You will be much happier and healthier for it. 💚✔️
If you crave sugar throughout the day or need something to snack on while you make dinner (😉) give these frozen coconut balls a try. You can throw them together in 5 mins.
Ingredients: 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut, 2 tbsp unrefined coconut oil, 2 tbsp coconut nectar or maple syrup, 1 tsp vanilla extract, pinch sea salt, 1 date, pitted.
Combine all ingredients in food processor and blend until smooth. Place mixture in mini silicon muffin tin and freeze for 15-20 mins. Eat frozen. #glutenfree#vegan#healthygut
I posted about this in my insta story yesterday but in case you missed it.. Heres my favourite hair mask for super dry, damaged and over processed hair: 1 ingredient! coconut oil. I sleep with it in for 8 hours, and let my hair soak in it when I'm working from home. #hairmiracles - give it a try! 💁🏼
Currently taking a break from work and relaxing with a #turmeric latte. It adds a warming zip-zip-zing to your tummy when you drink it down mmmm! + it's good for digestion. I added fresh ginger, coconut nectar, cinnamon, vanilla and black pepper to turmeric and warm almond milk, and blended it in the #Vitamix on high for 30 seconds. 💁🏼
Chlorella is a green algae.. yes... but you can add it to so many things besides smoothies- like cauliflower rice bowls! You can cook with it, but it's better to use in raw food recipes or add to dishes under 110 degrees to preserve its delicate nutrients.. as a powerful #skinfood I try to sneak chlorella in as many recipes as possible. Beta carotene, nucleic acids and healthy fats make chlorella one of the best anti-aging skin foods & can even help fade acne scars. For those of you who've asked which brand of chlorella I use, it's @sunchlorellausa (the best on the market IMO). 🌱
